The next section of Nielsen’s 2012 Social Media Report that we’re going to take a look at involves how, where, and why we connect to social media. For example, did you know that over 50% of people aged 25 to 34 connect to social media from their offices? According to the Nielsen report, they do (and a third of people aged 18-24 connect to social media in the bathroom the most!). Being able to answer these questions goes a long way toward helping you to figure out how, where, and why to market to your target demographics.

There are a couple of great takeaways we can use from this data.

  • If your target demographic happens to be people that work in an office environment and are between the ages 25 and 34, then the best time to post to your own social media accounts will likely be during regular business hours (and if your audience is between the ages of 18 and 24, you’re on your own, but if you figure out the right time to catch people in the bathroom somehow, let us know).
  • It’s important to encourage sharing among your users, since the second chart shows us that whether or not a user knows someone (or has mutual friends) has an effect on whether or not they decide to connect with them via social media.
